HERITAGE TOURISM INVITATION

posted Jul 18, 2011, 11:57 PM by JBay RA

September is Tourism AND Heritage Month.

In celebration of Kouga’s rich culture and history, the municipality’s new Tourism and Creative Industries Portfolio will be launching the first of a series of heritage tourism packages during September.

The aim of the packages will be to introduce both locals and visitors to the fascinating culture and history of Kouga and its people. These packages will range from day trips to longer tours with stop-overs at various accommodation establishments.

The initiative is part of the new Kouga Council’s vision to boost the local economy and create jobs.

We call on all residents who have stories, photographs or memorabilia about Kouga’s history and culture to contact us and become a part of this tourism drive.

Kouga is blessed that passionate local historians have already published books about the formal development of our towns. Very little has, however, been documented about the Apartheid Struggle in the region and we would like to make a special appeal to residents who have stories and photographs of the local Struggle to come forward and share their stories with us so that this history can be recorded.

To ensure that the heritage tourism packages are truly reflective of Kouga’s society as a whole, emphasis will also be placed on empowering township communities to tap into the potential economic benefits of tourism. The municipality will, therefore, be visiting communities to raise awareness of the opportunities available to them.

For further information or should you want to participate or contribute to the initiative, kindly contact Tourism Officer Kalipha Nelani at 042 200 2224 or email knelani@kouga.gov.za as a matter of urgency. Please note that all documents and photographs will be scanned and the originals returned to their owners as we realise they are of great sentimental value to their owners.

 Yours in service delivery
